Description

“Betty Crocker’s Picture Cook Book.” Published by General Mill, Inc. and McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc. in 1950, this is a first edition, second printing, so stated. The cookbook is a hard cover measuring 6¾ x 10 inches with 463 pages. The cookbook is in excellent gently used condition, it has some wear along the edges and corners, but not a lot; on the first page a previous owner wrote a notation in ink but flipping through I didn’t see any other markings. There is also a small foil sticker on the front free endpaper from Spencer’s book store in Battle Creek, Michigan at 91 W. Michigan.

Synopsis

In 1950, cookbooks reflected the expectation that mom would have dinner on the table when dad got home from work, cookies would be baked in time for junior’s bake sale, and all done efficiently, on budget, and with a smile. Time-tested, reliable . . . the American cookbook baby boomers remember with fondness. It’s the book that started it all, the well-loved edition that first bought Betty Crocker cookbooks into American homes and hearts. Published in 1950, Betty Crocker’s Picture Cook book made cooking easy, it made cooking appealing, and best of all, it made cooking fun. Packed full of practical tips, useful hints, and lavish color photography, this was the book that shaped cooking for generations, the book that people remember.

Every recipe you — or your mother — ever wanted is here, from pigs in blankets, to Emergency Steak to Chicken Tomato Aspic. Enjoy the clever ideas throughout — twelve months of birthday cake ideas, showing how to decorate a cake to match each month’s gem stone, pointers to make setting up a kitchen easy, or hints to make housework more pleasant. Feel a part of history when making Home Front Macaroni, developed during WW II rationing to stretch meat. Get into the spirit of fun with a Betty Crocker “Cookie Shine” or cookie baking party. People who grew up with this book will want it for the memories; those who are new to the book will want it for its charm and its intelligent approach to cooking. It’s a perfect keepsake and a great gift. The pages are brimming with timeless appeal, it’s American food at its coziest and most comforting, with recipes that are convenient in their ease and perfect in their simplicity. Betty Crocker’s Picture Cook Book keeps alive the belief that cooking can be easy, appealing and fun. Some things never change.
